You don’t always see the words “plastic surgery” and “fitness” together in one sentence. We’ve heard the arguments: Plastic surgery is a shortcut for those who don’t want to exercise. Plastic surgery is the lazy way to achieving a slimmer physique. The list goes on. There are those who advocate fitness and healthy living, emphasizing that all-natural is the way to go, while there are others who opt for plastic or cosmetic surgery. It seems these two camps – plastic surgery and fitness – can’t reconcile.
Guess what? This doesn’t have to be an “either/ or” debate. As Dr. LaDawn Talbott succinctly puts it, “Fitness and plastic surgery actually go together.” (And she should know: Not only is she a Board-certified plastic surgeon in Reno, she’s also a fitness and bodybuilding enthusiast set to compete at the Tahoe Show!)
Regular exercise and a healthy diet contribute to a person’s wellbeing, something that every doctor – whether they’re a primary care specialist or a cosmetic surgeon – would want for their patient. There are things, however, that even the healthiest of diets and the most rigorous of fitness regimens can’t address.
This is where plastic surgery comes in, as a supplement and not as a substitute. Plastic surgery procedures like liposuction can solve problems like:
- Stubborn pockets of fat. There will always be those fatty deposits in the thighs, buttocks, belly, or back that won’t go away no matter how hard you exercise.
- Loose or sagging skin. This could be the result of significant weight loss or it could simply be a sign of aging.
- Body contouring issues. We all have an ideal body shape or figure that we aspire to achieve, whether it’s a more desirable silhouette or a more toned physique.
Dr. Talbott further explains, “My job as a plastic surgeon is to get people to live a lifestyle that’s healthy, and in that healthy lifestyle, if they have problem areas, to treat those areas so they’re not having to kill themselves to obtain a body they’re going to have trouble maintaining throughout their life.”
It’s important to remember that plastic surgery can never replace good health, but let’s be honest, we also want to have an aesthetically pleasing appearance to improve our self-confidence. A healthy lifestyle is always the primary goal, and plastic surgery is there to enhance that quality of life, to make what is already beautiful even more so!
