Plastic surgery isn’t just for women. In fact, an increasing number of men are seeking out cosmetic procedures as a way to enhance their appearance. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, “More men are turning to aesthetic cosmetic procedures, with dramatic increases seen in both surgical and nonsurgical options over the past 5 years and a 43 percent increase overall.”

Since the organization began collecting statistical data in 1997, there has been a 273 percent increase in the number of male plastic surgery procedures performed. The increasing availability and diversity of cosmetic procedures has no doubt contributed to the growing number of male patients. Many cosmetic surgeons also conjecture that the competitive job market has driven more men to seek out cosmetic surgery.

Whether their intention is to look younger, thinner, or more handsome, these are the five types of plastic surgery that are most sought after by men:

Blepharoplasty

Eyes may be the windows of the soul, but they also display some of the most noticeable signs of aging, including droopy eyelids, wrinkles, and dark puffy under eyes. These signs of age are often misinterpreted as signs of fatigue, prompting unwanted comments about how tired a person looks.

Blepharoplasty lifts the top and bottom eyelids, giving the eyes a fresh and youthful appearance. Eyes that look young, open, and awake can have a very positive impact on how a man is viewed in both work and social situations.

Gynecomastia

Breast reductions aren’t just for women! In fact, men of all ages may be embarrassed by excess skin and fat on their chest. Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction, helps men achieve a more masculine chest by reducing breast size and enhancing chest contours. Gynecomastia surgery uses liposuction to remove excess fat. Incisions may also be made to remove excess skin and improve the appearance of the areolas.

Neck Lift

Skin around the neck that has lost its elasticity gives the unfortunate appearance of a “turkey neck.” Droopy skin around the neck is especially embarrassing for professional men who wear collared shirts and ties on a daily basis. A droopy neck may make a man’s face look heavier, even if he hasn’t gained weight. The masculine look of a strong jawline is also impaired by sagging neck skin. An increasing number of men are choosing neck lifts as a way to combat premature aging and maintain a strong and masculine jaw line.

Rhinoplasty

A man’s handsomeness depends upon the symmetry and proportionality of his face. Having a large or crooked nose may erode a man’s appearance, even cause low self-esteem. Rhinoplasty is a popular male plastic surgery procedure among men who want to improve the appearance of their face with very little down time. Most rhinoplasty patients can return to work within a week following surgery.

Chin Augmentation

Strong jawlines project strength and are a hallmark of masculinity. Men with weak jawlines may seek out chin augmentation as a way to improve the prominence and proportionality of their face. Plastic surgeons can enhance the projection of a man’s chin with implants, or by repositioning the jawbone. Liposuction may also be used to create the appearance of a more sculpted jaw line.

Personal appearance impacts the way that men see themselves, and how they interact with others. More and more men are using plastic surgery as a tool to enhance their appearance in order to succeed in their work and personal lives.
