Breast Augmentation: Good Questions, Easy Answers

Posted March 05, 2015 in Practice News

breast augmentation surgeryAfter a lot of thought, you’ve finally decided: You want fuller, better-shaped breasts, but you still have so many questions. You’re not alone; women who look to improve their breast size and symmetry often share the same concerns and wonder about the same issues. Here at Talbott Plastic Surgery Center in Reno, we strive to set all of our patients’ minds at ease, resolve all concerns, and discover the best way forward for their breast augmentation procedure.

So, what are the most common concerns and frequently asked questions?

Before we answer that question, we’ll share the good news. Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic plastic surgery performed in the U.S. each year. Over 300,000 such procedures are done every year, and recent advances in techniques and implant technologies have led to increasingly successful outcomes.

Now back to the questions.

Which way to go: saline or silicone?
72% of all breast augmentations now utilize silicone. Many of these are performed with the newest generation of silicone gel, which retains uniform shape and most closely resembles natural breast tissue. While some candidates and specific cases call for saline, if you’re like most women, you’ll be a silicone implant candidate. Rippling, ruptures, and deflation common to saline implants are significantly reduced with modern silicone and the results generally speak for themselves.

What does it cost?
This depends on which material you and your surgeon decide on. Silicone is more expensive than saline, and the newest generation of Silicone gel implants are even more expensive. In our extensive experience, however, the improvements in safety, efficacy, and aesthetics are well worth the increase in price. As a basic guideline, you can expect to spend somewhere between $4,000 to $6,000 for your procedure.

How do I select a surgeon?
Think credentials and reputation. Your surgeon should be board-certified in reconstructive, cosmetic, and plastic surgery. He or she should also have an excellent reputation. Another great tip is to look carefully at before and after photos of their breast augmentation surgeries. Last, make sure that you are personally comfortable with your surgeon, the staff, and the facility, and that you are confident your surgeon can deliver the results you desire. It’s amazing how a personal approach to patient care and case evaluation can positively affect outcomes in plastic surgery.

What is the most appropriate size for me?
A responsible and qualified surgeon will help you arrive at this decision. It is, obviously, a very important concern. At the Talbott Plastic Surgery Center, we evaluate all factors including your lifestyle, unique physiological attributes and health history, and your personal goals before we select the size of your implants. Women who elect breast augmentation surgery all seek improved body contouring, self-esteem, and personal appearance. That’s why the size of your augmentation should be naturally appropriate, appealing, reasonably proportionate, and sustainable as you age.

What more can I do to ensure the best results and most favorable recovery?
Dr. LaDawn Talbott always discusses the steps patients should take before and after surgery in order to ensure the best results. Sufficient time off, excellent post-operative and ongoing self-care, restorative sleep, weight maintenance, and several other considerations factor into obtaining excellent results and a speedy recovery.
